Q.1 In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Conventions of the Thriller genre
Our task for this assignment was to create a 2 minute opening to a thriller. A thriller is a type of genre that simply aims to thrill. To thrill can mean many different things but the two most common in the filming industry is to experience a sudden sharp feeling excitement and to have a shivering or tingling sensation. Thriller films usually include lots of tension and suspense in order to make the plot interesting. This is what makes thriller films so popular. Thriller’s can cover a wide range of different sub genres. For example thrillers can be Psychological, action, crime, conspiracy and much more. In thriller films there tends to be lots of typical conventions, for example there are a lot of close up camera shots that show the emotion in people’s face or the detail in a certain item that adds to the tension. This is a good way to make the thriller more involving to the viewer as they can understand the emotion of the character more if a close up of their face is identifying this. For example below there is a still from the thriller film “Seven” showing the use of a close up shot. This is showing close detail of a persons actions.
More examples are shown below. This is a comparison of two images, one from our thriller and the other from a real thriller film. The one on the left has a still from our thriller showing a close up shot of one of our characters and the other one on the right is a close up of one of the characters out of the thriller film called “Psycho”. The close up from Psycho was taken during the famous shower scene that is one of the most iconic scenes in the thriller industry.
Another thriller convention is violence. An example is shown below with a still from the thriller film “Batman dark knight” showing physical violence.
The opening to a thriller needs to be gripping and interesting in order to keep the audience watching the thriller. The opening is the most important part of a thriller as it sets the narrative, setting and characterisation of the story. The titles in a Thriller also need to be effective as they can kind of suggest what type of thriller the film is. This is because if the titles are dark and mysterious then you might suggest that the thriller is psychological and if the titles are bold and bright then you might think that the thriller is an action thriller. An example of a good thriller opening is from the thriller film “Batman dark knight”. This is because the opening grips you and drawn into the film straight away due to the fast paced and exciting opening which really begins with a positive start to attract the audience. Below is a link to watch the “Batman dark Knight” opening on you tube.
In order to make our thriller effective we made sure that we included some typical thriller conventions in order to attract the audience who like the original factors included in the thriller genre. To help our thriller more though we included some different features that are not commonly used in normal thrillers in order to challenge others that may want to see a new twist and different style to the thriller genre. An example of a typical convention we used is shown below. The image on the left is from our thriller showing the location of our thriller which is very typical because it is a mysterious and creepy place which is run down and old. These are the type of thriller locations that are commonly used in thrillers. The one on the right shows a Thriller location of an abandoned house from the successful “The Happening”. So as you can see they both look very familiar which shows that we are sticking to a typical convention here.
Another thriller convention is the use of flashbacks. Flashbacks are used to show scenes in the past. They give the audience a different perspective on the plot. This is because flashbacks can show scenes from a different persons perspective in order for the audience to have a greater understanding of the character involved coming back to the present scene. This could influence the audience’s interpretation of the certain character depending on what they have done. An example could be if a character acted good and honest in the present scene of the thriller film and then a flashback later on in the film showed that same character performing acts of violence in the past. This will then add an act of surprise towards the audience creating a better plot to a thriller film and the audience also having a different thought towards the characters involved. Flashbacks are also sometimes a better way to show scenes in the past as it makes them dramatic and juxtaposition coming into the present scene. We used flashbacks in our thriller to show what has happened in the past in a different and interesting way. An example of the use of flashbacks in our thriller is shown below and as you can see we have changed the colour levels in order to make it apparent to the viewer that this certain scene is a flashback and not a present scene.
Our thriller titles were designed to be as suitable to the thriller genre as possible. We did this by looking at the titles of other thriller films and analysing what key features are included in the titles. These are examples of thriller film titles below.

Our thriller opening was inspired from another thriller film called “Seven”. We were inspired by this film because this opening was very good at attracting the audience straight away in order to keep the audience watching. So this is the type of response we wanted with our thriller. The opening in seven was made very successfully in order to keep the audience guessing. They did this by not giving away any key details during the opening like a face or something significant. If key details were given then the opening would not be as effective and the audience would not want to carry on watching because they already know who the mysterious characters were that keep the plot a surprise. In the Seven opening starts by showing a person dealing with pieces of paper, crossing out words, sticking stuff together, scraping of the skin on his fingers and much more. Throughout this opening scene most of the shots of the character only shows his hands. This is to make the plot of the opening interesting and suspicious. As a viewer you want to know what is happening. Questions like who is the character and what is he doing start to appear which give the viewer something to consider instead of the plot being given to the viewer without any though needed for the viewer. The scene makes it seem as if this character is getting rid of some criminal evidence. We were inspired by this opening because it was a bit different to normal thrillers and added a lot of suspense to the scene. So you can see from our thriller that it has the same kind of structure as the “Seven” opening. You can follow the link below to see the “Seven” opening and the reasons why we wanted to use a similar structure in our thriller.
In our thriller we went a step further and included gender reversal of our killer/victim in order to make the thriller even more suspicious. By including a gender reversal we have broke a typical thriller convention just to make the opening a bit different for the type of audience that want to see something new. We broke the thriller convention because in thriller films it is usually the man who attacks the women rather than the other ay round to add a new twist. This idea will also make the plot of our thriller more interesting to the audience as it will come as a shock to the viewer when they realise that the killer is a female and not the usually dominant male. This is something different that will get people interested in our particular thriller rather than any other thriller.
