Thriller evaluation Q.1

Q.1 In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Conventions of the Thriller genre

Our task for this assignment was to create a 2 minute opening to a thriller. A thriller is a type of genre that simply aims to thrill. To thrill can mean many different things but the two most common in the filming industry is to experience a sudden sharp feeling excitement and to have a shivering or tingling sensation. Thriller films usually include lots of tension and suspense in order to make the plot interesting. This is what makes thriller films so popular. Thriller’s can cover a wide range of different sub genres. For example thrillers can be Psychological, action, crime, conspiracy and much more. In thriller films there tends to be lots of typical conventions, for example there are a lot of close up camera shots that show the emotion in people’s face or the detail in a certain item that adds to the tension. This is a good way to make the thriller more involving to the viewer as they can understand the emotion of the character more if a close up of their face is identifying this. For example below there is a still from the thriller film “Seven” showing the use of a close up shot. This is showing close detail of a persons actions.

More examples are shown below. This is a comparison of two images, one from our thriller and the other from a real thriller film. The one on the left has a still from our thriller showing a close up shot of one of our characters and the other one on the right is a close up of one of the characters out of the thriller film called “Psycho”. The close up from Psycho was taken during the famous shower scene that is one of the most iconic scenes in the thriller industry.

Another thriller convention is violence. An example is shown below with a still from the thriller film “Batman dark knight” showing physical violence.

The opening to a thriller needs to be gripping and interesting in order to keep the audience watching the thriller. The opening is the most important part of a thriller as it sets the narrative, setting and characterisation of the story. The titles in a Thriller also need to be effective as they can kind of suggest what type of thriller the film is. This is because if the titles are dark and mysterious then you might suggest that the thriller is psychological and if the titles are bold and bright then you might think that the thriller is an action thriller. An example of a good thriller opening is from the thriller film “Batman dark knight”. This is because the opening grips you and drawn into the film straight away due to the fast paced and exciting opening which really begins with a positive start to attract the audience. Below is a link to watch the “Batman dark Knight” opening on you tube.

In order to make our thriller effective we made sure that we included some typical thriller conventions in order to attract the audience who like the original factors included in the thriller genre. To help our thriller more though we included some different features that are not commonly used in normal thrillers in order to challenge others that may want to see a new twist and different style to the thriller genre. An example of a typical convention we used is shown below. The image on the left is from our thriller showing the location of our thriller which is very typical because it is a mysterious and creepy place which is run down and old. These are the type of thriller locations that are commonly used in thrillers. The one on the right shows a Thriller location of an abandoned house from the successful “The Happening”. So as you can see they both look very familiar which shows that we are sticking to a typical convention here.

Another thriller convention is the use of flashbacks. Flashbacks are used to show scenes in the past. They give the audience a different perspective on the plot. This is because flashbacks can show scenes from a different persons perspective in order for the audience to have a greater understanding of the character involved coming back to the present scene. This could influence the audience’s interpretation of the certain character depending on what they have done. An example could be if a character acted good and honest in the present scene of the thriller film and then a flashback later on in the film showed that same character performing acts of violence in the past. This will then add an act of surprise towards the audience creating a better plot to a thriller film and the audience also having a different thought towards the characters involved. Flashbacks are also sometimes a better way to show scenes in the past as it makes them dramatic and juxtaposition coming into the present scene. We used flashbacks in our thriller to show what has happened in the past in a different and interesting way. An example of the use of flashbacks in our thriller is shown below and as you can see we have changed the colour levels in order to make it apparent to the viewer that this certain scene is a flashback and not a present scene.

Our thriller titles were designed to be as suitable to the thriller genre as possible. We did this by looking at the titles of other thriller films and analysing what key features are included in the titles. These are examples of thriller film titles below.

As you can see above, all the images of the titles are all very dark and dramatic. Thrillers like these usually have lots of dark colours, dramatic fonts and interesting titles. The titles are the first thing the audience will see so they have to be effective at attracting the audience straight away. These titles are the case for most thrillers so for our thriller we decided to make our titles suitable for the thriller genre. You can see our titles below and how we have made them very eery and suspicious. This means that our titles will be suitable to the thriller genre. We wanted our titles to be very effective so we decided to make our titles blend in with the beginning of our thriller. We did this by having about 5 pieces of paper that had the production name, distribution name and the names of the people involved in our thriller. Then one by one we burned them at the edges and sped up the scenes via editing. In between the burning of each piece of paper the scene went to a scene we filmed of the clouds going across in the sky. We also sped this up and the switch between paper burning and the sky happened every piece of paper. We made the titles this way so that the titles would be mysterious and creepy as well as being relevant to the opening of the thriller. This is because the burning of the paper could suggest that the killer is getting rid of the evidence used by burning it.

Our thriller opening was inspired from another thriller film called “Seven”. We were inspired by this film because this opening was very good at attracting the audience straight away in order to keep the audience watching. So this is the type of response we wanted with our thriller. The opening in seven was made very successfully in order to keep the audience guessing. They did this by not giving away any key details during the opening like a face or something significant. If key details were given then the opening would not be as effective and the audience would not want to carry on watching because they already know who the mysterious characters were that keep the plot a surprise. In the Seven opening starts by showing a person dealing with pieces of paper, crossing out words, sticking stuff together, scraping of the skin on his fingers and much more. Throughout this opening scene most of the shots of the character only shows his hands. This is to make the plot of the opening interesting and suspicious. As a viewer you want to know what is happening. Questions like who is the character and what is he doing start to appear which give the viewer something to consider instead of the plot being given to the viewer without any though needed for the viewer. The scene makes it seem as if this character is getting rid of some criminal evidence. We were inspired by this opening because it was a bit different to normal thrillers and added a lot of suspense to the scene. So you can see from our thriller that it has the same kind of structure as the “Seven” opening. You can follow the link below to see the “Seven” opening and the reasons why we wanted to use a similar structure in our thriller.

In our thriller we went a step further and included gender reversal of our killer/victim in order to make the thriller even more suspicious. By including a gender reversal we have broke a typical thriller convention just to make the opening a bit different for the type of audience that want to see something new. We broke the thriller convention because in thriller films it is usually the man who attacks the women rather than the other ay round to add a new twist. This idea will also make the plot of our thriller more interesting to the audience as it will come as a shock to the viewer when they realise that the killer is a female and not the usually dominant male. This is something different that will get people interested in our particular thriller rather than any other thriller.

Thriller evaluation Q.2

Q.2 How does your media product represent particular social groups?
In our thriller we wanted to make it unsettling and mysterious so this meant that we had to make the characters creepy and suspicious as well. This was where we got a few ideas from the “Seven” opening as the character in the beginning was very strange as he was doing things that were abnormal. So this is how we wanted our thriller to be with the character roles. You do not see the characters face in “Seven” during the opening until the end and then you realise that the person himself looks pretty strange especially seeing as he has blood all over him which you will see from the image below.

We have tried to create a similar effect with the characters in our thriller. The killer in our thriller will be very mysterious and creepy. Our character will be a female aged between 20 and 30. The plot around the killer is that this person is getting her revenge on the boys who she went out with and they dumped her. This is why she has lots of maps and sources of information that give her the details she needs in order to find her old boyfriends. To make sure that we keep the identity of the killer a secret we made sure that all the camera shots we used did not show her face right up until the end of the thriller opening. This meant that we only used close up shots when we showed the killer doing something like burning pieces of paper. We also used medium shots but below the top half of the body so that you could only see the killers legs. These features would create a bigger surprise and twist to the plot because it would build up to that one moment at the end where the audience realise it is a women killing men. We also made sure that our mise-en-scene props were suitable to the killer. For example to keep the gender of the killer a secret we made sure that we gave her dark and plain clothing rather then bright colourful dresses for example which would give the gender identity away. Below are two images of our two main characters. The victim (left) has blood on his shirt which suggests that he has been hurt in some form. He is also tied up with tape and as the audience you wonder what has happened to him. The killer (right) has mostly dark clothing and you cannot see their face. From this image the audience will want to know who this person is and what is he or she doing. These two characters are mysterious because they give the audience the sense of the unknown.

Thriller evaluation Q.3

Q.3 What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

For our thriller I would use the institution called Paramount Pictures. This is because they are a well known institution that specialise in thriller films. Paramount Pictures were founded in 1912 and this year is their 100th year anniversary. Paramount Pictures have their headquarters set up in Los Angeles and has lots of experience in the filming industry. Paramount Pictures have distributed many thriller films including the likes of “Shutter Island”, “Paranormal activity”, “Watchmen” and much more. This shows us that Paramount Pictures distribute great thriller films and would be able to make our thriller very popular. I would like this institution to distribute our thriller because our thriller suits Paramount Pictures style of films they distribute.

We choose a big American company to distribute our thriller because our thriller would get a lot more popularity due to the size of Paramount Pictures and America itself. We did not choose a small British company because we wanted to make sure that our thriller could be successfully publicised. Paramount Pictures would be able to do this better though as they have had a lot of success in the past by distributing lots of popular films.

Thriller evaluation Q.4

Q.4 Who would be the audience for your media product?

Below is a commentary video explaining our audience

Our audience will be the type of people who enjoy a creepy and psychological thriller with an interesting plot that will make you want to keep on watching. Our audience will also be people who are wanting a little bit of a twist in the thriller genre. We have done this through the gender reversal plot that will surprise a lot of people when they watch our thriller. A typical audience member who would watch our thriller would be about 16 years old, male and somebody who likes to watch thriller films with a mixture of conventional and unconventional features. The methods we used in order to find the relevant audience was to create two separate questionnaires and to research the audience’s knowledge of the thriller genre and the background knowledge into what makes a thriller successful.

Our thriller is going to be rated a “15”. This is because our thriller contains some scenes of violence that may upset the younger viewer’s. It is not so much the actual violence happening in our thriller but our thriller does suggest that scenes of violence have taken place.

Thriller evaluation Q.5

Q.5 How did you attract/address your audience?

To attract and address our audience the questionnaire and the vox pop we did helped significantly. They helped us develop our thriller into one that was suited to the audience more in terms of what they expected. The responses gave us good ideas into what the audience would like to see in our thriller. One questionnaire was through written answers and the vox pop was through video responses. This was so that we could get both verbally and physically views on the thriller genre and our thriller itself. If we did not do a questionnaire then we may have been targeting the wrong type of audience for our thriller decreasing the impact of our opening. In the vox pop video the people we asked said that in a thriller film they expected a hero and villain. They also expected a thriller to be dark, mysterious and creepy. Due to the responses we got we decided to make our thriller a psychological one due to the response we got from our audience research. This is because when we looked at one of our questionnaire’s we found out that the most popular sub genre was the Psychological one. Here is a pie chart below to show the results from this particular question.

The video of our vox pop video is shown below and also includes a little intro into what we as a group are going to do in terms of roles and what is going to happen in our thriller in terms of attracting our audience.

The BBFC guidelines will affect our thriller as we will need to ensure that our thriller suits the age category that we have chosen. For example we have to keep to the guidelines of the BBFC website for the 15 age category. The official BBFC guidelines are shown below.

15=Suitable for only 15 and over people
(Films under this category can contain adult themes, hard drugs, strong language and one use of very strong language, moderate-strong violence/sex references, and undetailed sex activity.)
Thriller films are usually rated 15 and above due to the content involved. They usually contain violence, language and more that would be too bad for under 15’s to watch.

Adding a good music soundtrack was a good feature to our Thriller which attracted the audience because it suited the Thriller genre and the opening very well. There were 4 soundtracks of the fire burning, the Flashback sound, the main soundtrack and the credits soundtrack. These soundtracks are shown below.

To attract our audience we used very specific camera shots that our audience wanted to see due to the responses from our questionnaires. For example we used the close up shot a lot to show the fine attention to detail. Whether it be somebody burning a piece of paper or the expression on someone’s face in our thriller.

With the narrative of our thriller we made sure that we did not include too much because we did not want to destroy the purpose of the plot. Keeping the opening quite and eery ensured that the audience would be attracted to our thriller and will watch intently to see what happens next. The only narrative we used was a short and sharp response from one of the characters which was not enough to interrupt the thrillers pattern.

The editing involved in our thriller would attract our target audience because we edited the thriller so that it was free flowing and all moved smoothly. The only real purposeful jumps in the thriller were the flashbacks as flashbacks are supposed to be jumpy and unnatural by surprising the audience. The thriller needs to be edited well in order to make the thriller creepy and mysterious.

The mise-en-scene in our thriller is very relevant to the thriller genre. This is because we have not included anything into our thriller that you would not expect in typical thriller film. For example below is a still of someone digging a hole with a shovel in our thriller. This is suitable to the thriller genre as they can sometimes be used as weapons and more in other thriller films I have seen. This will attract the audience as they would like to see the typical and conventional things seen in the thriller genre.

Our mise-en-scene location is also very suitable to the thriller genre and will attract the audience because it is old and run down which makes it a weird setting for a thriller. If the location we choose looked nice and had a happy feel about the place then our audience would not be impressed with our thriller as it has not stuck to the key conventions that are vital in a thriller film.

Thriller evaluation Q.6

Q.6 What have you learnt about technologies from the process of Constructing this product?

A key technology skill that I have learnt in the thriller project is the use of camera shots while using the video camera. This is because we have used some very good camera shots in our thriller which makes it more dramatic and involving. A good example is the close up shot which shows the emotion on people’s faces. I also learnt that all the different camera shots can be used in different ways in order for scenes in movies to be better. For example I have learned that an Aerial is usually used at the start of a film when they set the scene and show the location of where that certain scene is about to take place. In our thriller for example we used a long shot to establish the setting of the scene clearly for the audience as shown below.

When using the video camera the use of the tripod is also important. This is because a tripod is used to keep the video camera and the shot produced steady without any shake. This is important to for the audience to see the clips correctly without any wobble. When setting up a tripod you can expand 2 sets of lengths on each three of the legs. This allows movement so you can change the angle you shoot at. There is also a little spirit level on the tripod which will indicate when the tripod is at the right level to be straight and steady. We used the tripod well in our thriller as we always straightened out the legs appropriately and checked the spirit level to ensure it was stable. It is very important to use a tripod when somebody or some people are talking as you do not want the shot to be uneven so that the audience can see people’s emotions. This is something that we did in order for the audience to keep track of the thriller better.

Lighting is also important when filming because every time you are ready to film it is always important to check the lighting is appropriate for the specific scene you are filming. In our thriller I think are lighting was pretty good and we got all the footage we needed. Some of the lighting may have not been right but to solve this we just changed the colours on the i movie program to suite the rest of the thriller. We used the lighting well in order to keep the film opening looking like it was a thriller by including dark colours with little bright colours to add the sense of mystery.

Composition is something that we really needed to concentrate in our thriller because we wanted all the shots in our thriller to be relevant. One thing that helped our composition is the “golden mean” rule. This is when a line going diagonally across the shot divides the shot up. All features that are positioned across the line are features of importance. By using this rule we ensured that all the important factors in our thriller were in the middle of the shot on the line most of the time. This rule ensures that the audience can see the most important thing in the shot. An example of the use of the golden mean from our thriller is shown below. As you can see the most in portent thing is in the middle.

Another rule that helped with composition is the “rule of thirds”. The rule of thirds is when you place a grid 3x3 on the whole shot. This splits up the shot into the important factors. The lines across the shot show all the important features. An example of the “rule of thirds” from our thriller is shown below. The lines can identify characters, locations and props.

Throughout the whole creation of our thriller I have been introduced to many different technologies, especially in the editing of the thriller. This is because we used the apple Mac’s provided by the school. The main program we used was “I movie” as it was the best program for beginners in order to edit our thriller. Below is an image of the program “I movie” and how it is structured in order to edit correctly.

I movie contains lots of different features like transitions, clip editing, sound editing and more. An analysed still below shows some of the features that we used in our thriller using the i movie program. Please excuse the small writting.

When we started using “I movie” in our preliminary task I was new to the program so I did not know all the different features. After spending more time on the program though I now understand more of the program and can use some of the more difficult features in order to make our thriller more effective. An example of these new features is the transitions that we added to our thriller. The transitions in our thriller helped significantly in order to add a greater effect and meaning to the thriller. We used a few slow moving transitions like the cross dissolve and the cross blur to make our opening more dramatic instead of fast paced which would probably be used in action movies rather than thrillers. These slow paced transitions were especially used on the opening titles to slowly build up the opening of the thriller. We aimed to keep the pace of our thriller slow and dramatic so these transitions suited that style perfectly. Below is an image of some of the transitions we could have used of the program i movie. The ones we used the most were the cross dissolve and the cross blur.  This is because these transitions suited the thriller genre and our thriller opening because they are slow moving and mysterious. We did not use many of the other transitions because the “spin in” transition for example is very fast and jumpy which would be used more in an action film or comic book.

An important skill that was used in our thriller is cutting. This skill helped us to cut down some of the footage in our thriller so that we only got the footage that we needed and wanted. On the day of our shoot we filmed more footage then we actually needed to ensure that we had enough just in case some scenes were wrong. So the cutting skill allowed us to cut clips down so that all the appropriate clips linked in correctly. This would help the continuity of the thriller opening.

Another important skill is adding sound/music onto our thriller. Throughout our thriller we created 4 pieces of sound to be added. One was a fire soundtrack, one a flashback sound, one the credits soundtrack and the other the main soundtrack. These all helped in making our thriller more effective. The sound added will create a more dramatic effect and a more mysterious thriller.

For our thriller we made sure that we used the continuity technology. This ensures that the thriller runs smoothly from one clip to another. This means that no jumps or cuts are involved in our thriller. To help the continuity we used the transitions of the i movie program. The transitions made the thriller opening look like one whole continuous scene rather than confusing individual scenes that are jumpy and not suitable to the thriller plot.

The editing technology helped our thriller a lot because it allowed us to change colours, transitions, cutting, audio levels and much more. For example editing would help if one of the clips we had were too bright due to the sunshine. Editing though would allow us to change the colour levels so that the clip suited the rest of the thriller by being quite dark and eery. Through editing the I movie program allowed us to put our thriller opening together appropriately ensuring that there is a good deal of continuity involved.

Another new technology skill that I have learned while creating the thriller opening is using the blog correctly in order to put all of my work onto. To create our blog we used the website www.blogger.com in which you can use this link in order to find it. This blog website was quite hard to use when I started media and I had trouble putting videos, photos, music and more onto the blog. Over time though I soon got the hang of the website and by the time the thriller project came about I was able to add work to my blog a lot easier. To get the images onto the blog I had to save them into my documents and then upload them from there. For the videos I had to do the same but my biggest obstacle was the music as I had to go on the apple Mac’s, take a blank picture of a red screen, put it in i movie and add the music from there. This was because the blog would not accept music files directly. Below is an example of the music files I created and put on my blog.

Thriller evaluation Q.7

Q.7 Looking back at your Preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

When we created our Preliminary task I was new to media and the technologies involved so our prelim only had the basic features used in it. When we started our thriller opening though I understood media more as I became more aware of how to use the Apple Mac’s, cameras, blog and more in order to make our thriller more effective.

An important skill that I was taught at the beginning of starting media was the important 180 degree rule. This is a rule where when filming a conversation between two people for example you must film from the same side of the conversation all the time in order for the audience to understand the scene. This is because if the camera shot changed to the other side half way through a conversation then the person you were trying to watch then they would be in the wrong position possibly confusing the viewer. Two examples of this rule are shown below.

Continuity is an important factor when filming because it allows the whole footage to be smooth, in time and relevant to the chosen subject. In our preliminary task we did alright on the continuity as we included good transitions and the shots that changed location were edited well to stay in sync. There was only one mistiming on the prelim though. You can see from the video above, it was when the main character played by one of our group members went to open a door at the top of the stairs and it came out a little jumpy. The problem was with the footage filmed in this scene so the only thing we could do was to try and smooth it out as much as possible. So we could have improved on this scene by filming more accurately in that particular incident. After our prelim we now knew to take even more care while filming to ensure that we could edit the clips so they had continuity. We did this in our thriller and I don’t think there were any jumpy moments at all in our thriller which showed that we learned from our mistake. Another issue that might have affected the continuity of our thriller and prelim is keeping all the props and costumes the same throughout them both. We did not have a problem with this though as the props and costumes were all kept the same so that the audience could not question anything. An example that we kept the same costumes on our characters are shown below as you can see that one of our characters has the same clothes on from two different scenes.

By producing our prelim before our thriller I feel as if I know a lot more about the types of camera shots and which ones are effective in a thriller. To set the scene in our prelim we used a long shot which is shown on the left below. I thought that this shot could have maybe been shot a bit better. This is because we could have moved the camera more centrally overlooking him and position the character more in the middle of the shot so that the “golden mean rule” would apply. This would increase the effectiveness of the shot used. So to improve this situation when we used this shot in our thriller as you can see on the right below, we made sure that the character and the camera were more central. We also ensured that the scenery around the character was suited to the camera shot. From this I have shown that after time I now know what features need to be involved in order to make a good camera shot.

In our Prelim our music soundtrack was only the music of the Apple Mac’s because we were new to the music programs like audacity and more. So when making the thriller opening we made some really impressive soundtracks that made our thriller better than if we had of used the basic music of the Apple Mac’s. We decided to make our own soundtrack as it suited our thriller better and it made the scenes in our thriller more effective as a thriller. This shows that I now know what type of music suit the thriller genre. Below are two files showing the soundtrack we used in our Preliminary task at the top and the soundtrack we used in our thriller at the bottom.

I was also able to understand more about the thriller genre and what was needed in our thriller in order for it to be an effective opening. I would not have been able to do this if we were making the thriller project at the start of the year when I only had information of thrillers when I had watched thriller films. I also understood the lighting used in thrillers better. This is because in our thriller we did not tamper with the lighting colours used in our Preliminary task that much. In our thriller though we changed the lighting by editing  nearly all the clips in our thriller in order to make the thriller more suitable for the thriller genre in being dark, mysterious and eery. An example of the lighting change can be shown below as in our thriller can be shown below as the image on the left shows the sky we filmed with the lighting changed and the lighting changed on the flashback scenes on the right hand side. These editing skills show that I have learnt more about the use of editing since the prelim continued into the thriller task.

Thriller opening

A thriller opening is very important in order to attract the audience to encourage them to carry on watching. Thriller openings are designed to thrill and capture the audiences emotions by using a powerful and dramatic opening. A good example of a thriller opening is from the film "seven". This is because the opening includes a person that is cutting off his fingerprints, crossing out stuff and overall getting rid of evidence. This gives the impression that he has probably committed a murder. Throughout the whole opening you do not see that persons face and you wonder who he is. This is one of the factors in the opening that make you want to keep on watching the rest of the film. Another example of a good thriller opening is from the film "Batman dark knight". This is becasue the opening is very good at building up the tension to a higher scale event. This again keeps the audience interested. The opening starts with an average bank robbery but as the opening progresses the plot starts to develop and the characters start to introduce themselves in terms of their appearence and what they do. This keeps the audience guessing and involved in the storyline. A link to the two thriller opennings on you tube are shown below. The top one is "Seven" and the bottom one is "Batman dark knight".This link is invisible on the page but it will appear when the cursor is below the first link

Thriller flashback soundtrack music

Above is our Thriller flashback soundtrack that was used every time that we used a flashback in our Thriller. This sound gave us a very effective sound that clearly identified that the certain scenes with this noise in where flashback scenes and not present scenes.

Thriller fire soundtrack music

Above is our Thriller fire soundtrack. We used this in the burning of the paper in our credits. This made a very good noise that amplified the sound of the credit paper burning.

Thriller credits soundtrack music

Above is our soundtrack for our Thriller credits. The credits were made to be mysterious and eery to build up the opening to the Thriller. This worked well in creating a good opening for our Thriller.

Thriller main soundtrack music

Above is our main soundtrack for our Thriller. This soundtrack is an eery and strange sound which is supposed to sound like wind rustling to make the scene seem disturbing.
